Saturday continued...
18:20 Scott Street Bridge. No problem here as the bridge is permanently open since the mechanism and general condition of the bridge became to costly to continue operation. I think it’s a listed building, but no funds exist to restore it to operation. 18:25 Chapman Bridge. The sun is just setting as we reach this bridge. They aren’t hanging around the council bridge teams today, and the bridge is already open when we reach it. 18:33 Wilmington Bridge. The bridge is already open. It used to be the railway bridge for the Withernsea line, but is now only a footpath bridge. 18:37 Railway Bridge. Already open when we reach it, the operatives are enjoying the evening sat on the track end. 18:44 Stoneferry Bridges. A bit of wait here, and the wind was blowing well. We found a bit of a wall to wait on. When the bridges start to drop again I noticed one started before the other – not sure if the buttons were pressed at different times or the pump is shared. The road was opened first on the faster bridge as well – no time wasted. Bob Webster was on the bank waving us on. 18:53 ICI. No barge seen, then suddenly realized that it had been moved down to Stoneferry along with all the other barges. 19:05 Sutton Road. Since my Dad was getting a warmer coat on I didn’t get a picture – I did take one with his camera which I’ll try to get on the website. 19:34 Ennerdale Link Bridges. A really long wait at these – there often is, and I’m not sure why as the distance between Sutton Road, and Ennerdale is quite a way by water. The wind was blowing us into the weeds at one side of the river. I told Dad to stick his bow into the other side but the new piling along the bank was hiding just below the water, and we bounced off again! Somehow Bob managed to get into the control tower (can you highjack a bridge), and gave us a wave. There was a good queue of traffic along the road which the river turns to follow. Now it was full steam ahead to get back to Hull Bridge. I wanted to get back early as I had to drive back to Northolt that night. 5.5 mph was made against the tide. | |||
