Saturday continued...

14:44 Ennerdale Bridge.

15:05 ICI Factory – A particularly wide barge “Swinderby” moored on the Wharf. Carries chemicals from one of the Hull docks I believe.

15:11 Clough Road Bridge. A new jetty on the Rix mooring suggests some action may be happening here. I don’t know if Rix still owns the site though. Lots of Barges just through the bridge, including Torksey.

15:37 Old Harbour. General lack of barges means that we have to tie-up on the jetties. Not a problem at this state of tide, but a really big problem at low water, when you can’t get near the sides. We decide to poke our nose out into the Humber to see what it is like in force 4-5. We soon turn around when we see “Rix Hawk” flying up stream. We wait for the wash to dissipate, and then try again. This time another coaster is bearing down on us, but we decide to go for it. I head into the tide, and the waves (southerly). No waves are noticeable from the coaster, so I turn to go towards Grimsby. We make less than 1 mph against the current, the waves make the prop cavitate, but the boat seems quite stable. I turn it around, and in no time we are back at “‘os wash” (Horse Wash – a slipway on the river front). Probably not a good day for doing any distance, but I don’t think a dangerous day.

16:15 Old Harbour – We moor on the frontage, and wait for high tide.

17:58 Old Harbour – High tide, and we are off! Around ten boats, most under their own power set off up the river.

18:07 Drypool Bridge. Raised quite quickly, but still some waiting. Apparently when the bridges are raised the emergency services are called to check no vehicles are en route.

18:14 North Bridge. Bit of wait here as the boats get through the previous bridge. They only open one at a time. I believe they have two teams, and so the team from Drypool then go up to the next road bridge. Sirens are heard reverberating around the buildings. I hope they know the bridge is up. Two ambulances are seen storming over Drypool bridge, but it seems no one told the police who turn up at North Bridge just as it starts closing.
