28/5/03 Wednesday
8:00 We set off early as we wanted to do the Chesterfield in the same week, and taking the long way around was making us late. We stopped at the new marina in Barton Turn to fill up with fuel. We had completely used up our emergency supply, so we topped everything back up to full. 11:28 Burton Upon Trent. We stopped to have a look in the Chandlery for brass port holes, but they didn’t have the size we wanted. 13:58 Stenston Lock. Lots of people out enjoying the canal today. We continued down the canal alone, which was just as well, we were in a hurry to get to Sawley before it closed. Dad started to walk from Shardlow, but was soon stopped by the recently removed towpath bridge at Derwent Mouth. In the meantime I was working through my first solo lock – even if there was another boat in it! 18:19 Sawley. We had missed the closing time, but the cleaner was still about, and we managed to pick up the fuel pump and filter. The pump was the wrong one anyway, but we replaced the filter, which seemed to sort it out.

29/5/03 Thursday
~10:00 Use of the facilities at Sawley lock were welcomed. The shower was 1 unit, which I thought was good price. We made our way down a tranquil river Trent, stopping at Sainsbury’s in Nottingham to do some shopping, and to get a McDonalds. 16:39 Back on the Trent again, lots of rowers again. 21:00 We reached Newark in the twilight, and stayed the night on the floating pontoons.
