17/5/03 Saturday Cont

14:01 Cromwell, and the rest of the trip was uneventful. The GPS plotting screen was useful to tell which corner of the upper tidal Trent we were on.

15:08 Newark Nether, met another boat at last! Didn’t seem to have much of a clue about mooring up in a lock when it’s windy. Choose the wrong side, and kept getting blown away from it!

19:15 Hazelford Lock, noticed a Hargreaves tug normally found on the Aire and Calder. I think they were getting some work from gravel pits here. Working the locks manually now, as out of hours.

20:12 Gunthorpe Lock, nice trip in between the showers. We even got to see a couple of seconds of sun! There was a large amount of suds in the water from the detergents often (always?) found in the Trent. Some were like icebergs.

21:30 Stopped at Stoke Lock for the night. We’ve done 90 miles in one day, phew!

18/5/03 Sunday

10:00 Usual start time again. We’ve still got a long way to go, as we have to get to Sawley, and I have to go all the way back to Hull, to go all the way back again to Reading!

10:45 Holme Pierpoint looks different now. I couldn’t place it until I had a look around, and found that they had concreted the old lock completely up. It’s a shame because it was one of the last original Trent locks, and it has a nice little swing bridge over it also.

11:15 It looks like an open day at the Sea Scouts. There was lots of traffic on this section of the river, several rowers, sailors, and motor boaters.

11:31 – 14:21 Beeston Cut.

15:22 Nottingham Yacht Club is holding a rally at Cranfleet Lock. Looks like there is either a fancy dress theme, or the local army barracks were on leave.

16:20 Sawley Boat Club, and our mooring for the next 4 days.
